New Music Ensemble

SonoMania is a Bucharest based new music ensemble founded in 2012. The purpose of SonoMania is to attract a more numerous audience for modern and contemporary music, through the remarkable enthusiasm, talent and dedication of its members.  SonoMania is mostly interested in concerts with an interdisciplinary component (multimedia, photography, dance, performance), as well as promoting the young generation of Romanian new music creators.


Core members of SonoMania are: Raluca Stratulat (violin), Valentin Ghita (oboe), Mihai Pintenaru (clarinet), Tamara Dica (viola), Eugen Bogdan Popa (cello), Mihai Murariu (piano) and Diana Rotaru (artistic director, piano)


SonoMania was so far included in international festivals of contemporary music, such as The International New Music Week in Bucharest (2012, 2013, 2016-2018), InnerSoundInternational New Arts Festival – Silent Film Night(2012-2018), the MERIDIAN ISCM-Romanian Section International Festival (Bucharest, 2012-2018), DesideriaFestival of the Accademia Filarmonica Romana (Rome, 2017), Toamna Muzicală Clujeană / Cluj Musical Autumn(Cluj, 2016), Craiova Muzicală / Musical Craiova(Craiova, 2016), CIMRO DAYS (2014, 2018), Bucharest Music Film Festival – ArCuB (2012-2014), The 18th Festival of Contemporary Music – Happoman2012 (South Korea), the Bucharest Biennale of Contemporary Arts (2012), CatsheuvelFestival (The Hague, 2014).


The ensemble has premiered works by composers such as Doina Rotaru, George Balint, Mihai Măniceanu, Henry Vega, Mihai Murariu, Gabriel Mălăncioiu, Șerban Marcu, Vlad Maistorovici, Diana Simon, Diana Gheorghiu, Sabina Ulubeanu, Sorin Marinescu, Alexandru Sima, Megumi Okuda, Gabriel Almaşi, Tudor Feraru, Cristian Bence-Muk, Victor Colțea, Cristian Lolea and many more. SonoMania has collaborated with conductors such as Gabriel Bebeşelea, Alexandru Solonaru, Alexandru Mija, Simona Strungaru, Vlad Baciu and Lucian Beschiu, as well as participated in various projects together with choreographer and dancer Cristina Lilienfeld, dancer and actress Smaranda Găbudeanu or performers such as Irinel Anghel and Paul Dunca.

Sound Fabric (2017, International Bucharest New Music Week, conductor Simona Strungaru) – minimal-repetitive music and contemporary dance (Cristina Lilienfeld) OPERA 9 (2017, part of Project N-ESCU organized by the National “George Enescu” Museum, conductors Vlad Agachi, Simona Strungaru) – contemporary collective opera, 9 scenes – 9 composers, on a libretto by Rucsandra Pop that reinterprets the myth of Oedipus
